Advanced Cryotherapy for Skin Lesion Removal
Park Private Clinic offers specialist cryotherapy services for the safe and effective removal of warts, skin tags, verrucae and other benign skin lesions.
Common skin lesions can cause discomfort and may be aesthetically concerning for many patients. Whilst prescription treatments and over-the-counter remedies are available, these often prove insufficient for persistent lesions. Our Nottingham-based private GP clinic provides cryotherapy as a clinically-proven alternative.
Particularly stubborn or longstanding lesions may require multiple treatment sessions. Each procedure typically takes only minutes to complete and causes minimal discomfort.
Understanding Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a controlled procedure that removes skin lesions through rapid freezing. The treatment employs liquid nitrogen, which has an exceptionally low boiling point of -196°C.
Our clinic utilises the advanced Cryopen system, which represents an improvement over conventional cryotherapy methods by delivering the cryogenic agent at higher pressure and lower temperatures. This precision technology enables the accurate targeting of lesions as small as 1mm in diameter.
Treatable Conditions
Cryotherapy is suitable for a broad spectrum of benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions, including:
- Viral warts
- Verrucae
- Skin tags
- Actinic keratoses
- Seborrhoeic keratoses
Certain superficial low-grade skin cancers may also be treatable with this method. Your doctor will comprehensively discuss the potential benefits and risks of cryotherapy before commencing any treatment.
The Treatment Process
All procedures are conducted under medical supervision. During treatment, liquid nitrogen is applied to the affected area using either a spray device, a metal probe or a cotton applicator. Application duration varies according to the size, depth and type of lesion being treated. Following initial freezing, the skin is allowed to thaw naturally before the process is repeated once or twice more.
Post-treatment, the lesion typically forms a scab which will separate naturally within 1-2 weeks. Depending on the characteristics of the lesion, multiple treatment sessions may be necessary for complete resolution.
Patients may experience a burning sensation immediately after treatment, though this typically subsides within minutes or, rarely, hours. If persistent pain develops at the treatment site, please inform us promptly. Standard analgesics such as paracetamol may be taken to alleviate discomfort.
Blister formation is a possible occurrence following treatment.
Potential Side Effects
- Pain or discomfort (common)
- Swelling and redness (common)
- Blister formation
- Altered pigmentation at the treatment site (more common in individuals with darker skin tones)
- Temporary numbness
- Recurrence of the skin lesion
- Infection (rare)
- Scarring (rare)
Aftercare Guidelines
- Maintain dryness of the treated area
- Avoid disturbing any scab that forms
- Expect initial redness and mild swelling; occasional blisters may develop
- If a blister forms, it may be drained using a sterile needle
- The treated area will typically scab and may darken in colour over several days
- Allow the scab to detach naturally rather than removing it prematurely
- Healing generally occurs within approximately one week
- Be aware that some changes in skin pigmentation (lightening or darkening) may occur once the scab separates, particularly in individuals with darker skin tones
