What are thread veins?
Thread veins, or vascular veins are twisted red, blue or purple blood vessels that are visible through the skin, usually developed in the face or the legs. Although thread veins are usually a cosmetic problem, they can cause minor symptoms on the affected areas, such as itching or slight pain.
Candela laser treatment, or vascular laser treatment, can dramatically improve the appearance of unwanted Thread Vein, Red Veins such as Spider Nevi, Cherry Angiomas and Rosacea. At Park Private Clinic, we offer Candela YAG Laser Vein Treatment to treat the following:
- Facial thread veins/broken capillaries
- Legs veins (up to 1.5mm diameter)
- Spider Nevi
- Cherry Angiomas
- Venous Lakes (on lips)
- Rosacea
What are the causes?
There are numerous causes for the development of thread veins, such as age, exposure to extreme temperatures, weak valves or venous insufficiency, etc. Further risk factors that have been identified are:
- Pregnancy
- The consumption of birth control pills
- Hormonal influences (such as puberty or menopause)
- Obesity
- Heredity
- Injury/Trauma to the skin
- Genetics/inherited factors
How does Laser Vein Treatment work?
Laser Vein Treatment works by creating a beam of high-intensity light that targets the veins, whilst protecting the upper layers of your skin. The laser heats the blood vessel up, which then stimulates collagen contraction of the vessel and destroys it. Over time the vessel will be re-absorbed and eliminated by the body. Your thread veins will simply disappear!
There are three types of lasers that are used to remove thread veins. The type that is used for the treatment depends on the intensity and diameter of the vein. This is detected through using a vein gauge to measure the size and depth of the vessel. After doing so, the appropriate laser technology and wavelength will be decided to treat the thread veins.
The treatment consists of long wavelengths, used to treat deep blue or purple thread veins. These are able to penetrate deep into the tissue and into greater blood vessels, as it gives more consistent heat to the vessel. In reference to diameter, these are used to treat blood vessels from 0mm to 3mm maximum
Also, when treating thread vessels, spot sizes are taken into account, as it refers to the amount of control and depth of laser penetration into the skin. There are different spots that the laser uses in terms of penetration. For example, larger vessels need bigger spot sizes as they require deeper penetration, whereas smaller vessels require smaller spot sizes to limit the penetration.
How long does vascular laser treatment treatment take?
The duration of the laser depends on the diameter and size of the thread vein, as bigger veins require longer periods of time and pulse durations so that the laser light can be absorbed. For example, 0.5 – 1.5 mm veins may require 20-50 milliseconds of pulse durations. Overall, the length of time that it takes to eliminate the thread veins completely will depend on the intensity of the vein and the treatment area. As each person is different, some people may also require more than one session.
What can I do before the treatment?
Before the treatment, we suggest that the treatment area is completely clean and dry and any application of skin care products should be avoided. This includes any tanning creams, facial creams, etc. Also, the affected area should not be exposed to sun 4-6 weeks before the treatment.
Does the treatment cause any pain?
Although heat is used to destroy the tissue and the vessels, the laser only works on the unwanted thread veins and leaves the rest of the skin untouched. As a result, there may be a slight pressure on the affected area and small tingling sensations. However, if you do feel uncomfortable with the treatment, there will be some soothing gel or anaesthetic. If you are worried about the sensations of the treatment, you can also speak with the professional.
What can I do after the treatment?
After the treating the thread vein, we advise you to avoid the sun completely after the treatment for a few days to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation or use SPF 30 sunblock. Furthermore, avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours and avoid wearing compression stockings if you have been treated on your legs.
